Dr. Usachev grew up in Kiev, Ukraine. He obtained his Ph.D. degree in Biology and Biophysics in 1993 from the Bogomoletz Institute of Physiology (Kiev, Ukraine). After that, he received an Eastern European Award for postdoctoral training at Cambridge University (UK), before moving to the University of Minnesota in 1995, where he worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow and then Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacology. He joined the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Iowa as an Assistant Professor in 2003, and where he is now John P. Long Endowed Professor of Pharmacology. In his free time, Dr. Usachev enjoys reading, running, bicycling, traveling and spending time with his family.

Alex is from Tucson, Arizona, and earned a B.S. in chemistry with a minor in biology from Linfield College (McMinnville, OR) in 2017. Alex’s research is in determining the role of neuro-immune interactions within the spinal cord in pain sensitization. Alex enjoys traveling and spends free time reading, baking, writing poetry, and drawing scientific illustrations.
Grant Walters
Graduate Research Assistant

Grant grew up in Byron, Minnesota and attended undergrad at Gustavus Adolphus College where he graduated in 2014 with a B.A. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and a minor in Neuroscience. He then worked for a year as a medical scribe, before joining a post-baccalaureate program in 2015 at Mayo Graduate School in Rochester, MN. Grant joined the Neuroscience PhD program at the University of Iowa in the fall of 2016 and joined the Usachev lab in the spring of 2017. He is interested in the role of mitochondria in regulating intracellular calcium and how disrupting this regulation may alter neuronal activity and promote survival in disease states. His hobbies include fishing, hunting, exercising, and playing with his dog.
Leonid Shutov, PhD
Assistant Research Scientist
